Dane gave some additional suggestions on how to make a better gasser sketch. He suggested that there should be more details, like a roll cage, a driver, deeper wheels in the back, a name for the car, and additional "easter eggs."
I took those suggestions to heart and created a sketch with more appropriate proportions and more details. Some of those details are Austin artist specific ;)
A gasser sketch
This week's topic for sketchwars is to draw a hot rod. My friend Dane suggested that I should draw a gasser. I wasn't sure exactly what that was, so I did a quick google image search and saw ridiculously modified hotrods for drag racing. I loved seeing the giant tires in the back, the super skinny tires in the front, the unusual lifted stance and the exposed mechanicals.
This is my attempt at capturing the ridiculous, awesomeness of the gasser hotrod. This version is some sort of 1950's chevy with an exposed roots supercharger.
Graffiti park on Sunday
As usual, there was some really great work at the graffiti park. I had another attempt at graffiti with my robot. It turned out pretty good, despite not getting enough of certain colors. I still need a lot more practice with controlling my lines.
Free art Friday
In Austin, the artists sometimes like to participate in "Free Art Friday." During Free Art Friday, artists hide their pieces around town for anyone to find. You track down those pieces using Instagram and searching under the #atxfreeartfriday or #atxfaf_official tags.
This week's theme involved creating art on masonite Texas shapes. I chose to draw an Indian pattern surrounding the star, representing Austin's place in Texas. It felt very satisfying seeing this piece going to a good home!
A more athletic robot
This is a more athletic looking offering for the Sketchwars group. I was inspired by the anime Evangelion, as well as the latest track car the "BAC Mono." I decided to render this a little further with multiple materials as well as including a background. These types of sketches require a little more patience, but the results look very well polished!
A clumsy robot
Last Thursday, I decided to draw a clumsy robot for Sketchwars. I was inspired by the earlier Honda prototypes, where the head/body was fairly clean and simple, while the legs were very mechanical. I wanted the robot to be more friendly/comical rather than super intimidating.
A sketch for Tanya
My friend Tanya asked me to do a sketch to help her with her "Saree not Sorry" campaign. She wishes to fight anti-immigrant sentiment by promoting Indian fashion.
You can check out her campaign here
A girl in a sari
This weeks topic is drawing people. This was a good excuse for me to draw a girl in a sari. For years, I've been meaning to do that!
Some shoes for Sketchwars
These were sketched on an iPad Mini during my trip to California last weekend. The iPad mini is a clumsy sketch tool, but it helped me loosen up.
Sketchwars entry for this week: an electric BMW bike
This was a pretty fun sketch to work on. I imagined the wheels would be driven by plate motors while the main body houses the batteries and heat sinks.
A watch doodle
I was in the mood to sketch a watch tonight. I may sketch more industrial design drawings this week.
Sketch wars entry: Max Rebos party ship
The theme for that week was to create a ship for one of the minor characters in Star Wars. I chose to design a ship for Max Rebo and his crew.
Some other various sketches from this week...
Heres another robot, a hand sketch inspired by the "Screaming Years" show coming up and a boat for the sketchwars group.
A Millenium Falcon sketch
I spent a good amount of time working on this Millenium Falcon sketch. I'll add color to it later!
Last weekend at the graffiti wall
During the last visit, I made another attempt at graffiti with this robot. I need to practice more!
Some sketching at the graffiti wall
This year, I'm also trying to make a habit of sketching at the HOPE Outdoor Gallery. Its a great way to place to hang out during the weekends and hang out with artist friends.
A Stormtrooper sketch
I wanted to create some artwork based on "The Force Awakens." This was done on Letraset paper with markers. Its refreshing to create artwork with traditional medium!
Some Star Wars sketches for Sketchwars
I've been in a Star Wars mood since the release of "The Force Awakens." I thought it was a really great movie and saw it four times. These are some entries for the Facebook group, "Sketchwars."
Some sketches while I was in Cleveland
This year, I wanted to sketch more for myself. I started out with drawing some firetrucks for my nephew. I also made a new years resolution to draw more robots.
iPad sketch from the graffiti park
I saw a really cool mural at the graffiti park last Sunday. It turned out pretty good, but I still feel the iPad is a clumsy sketch tool.
