A more polished Cartier watch sketch

August 24, 2016

I wanted to create a digital sketch, after seeing how pen and marker has its limitations. With a digital sketch, you can more effectively depict details and materials. This design incorporates a body thats a more simple, classic round shape. The inner face takes elements from Cartier's "Skeleton" series, in which the mechanism is visible. The numbers are a structural element with a brushed finish, contrasting with the shiny chrome finish of the body. This sketch took a good amount of time to render out. Fortunately, I was talking to my friend while working. This sketch was a combination of Corel Painter and Photoshop.

Some overlays for my friend

August 13, 2016

Today, I helped my friend with her sketching by doing some overlays. Its pretty fun being able to discuss my thought process and point out how to draw car in perspective. I've showed how I like to draw through, section lines, and being able to loosen up. I may need to draw more cars in the future!

Sketching some heels

August 1, 2016

A few days ago, I was pretty stumped on what I was going to sketch. After talking with a friend, she recommended that I should draw "Christian Louboutin" heels. I wasn't sure who Christian Louboutin was and I never drawn heels before, so I thought I would give it a try. The first page on top, was a little unsuccessful. With the second and third pages, I felt more comfortable drawing feet and shoes. I really enjoyed doing these sketches and may plan on doing some more later!

An alien for sketchwars...

June 7, 2016

Last weeks topic was to sketch an alien. I did a fairly quick sketch on my iPad with Procreate. I decided to make an amphibian-like alien based on a tree frog. For some added character, I made him a bit hipster-ish with his low slung jeans and prominent belt buckle.

A logo for my dentist friend

June 7, 2016

One of my friends requested a logo for the San Antonio District Dental Society. She requested that the logo should contain elements of San Antonio as well as include purple, a color associated with dentistry. The final direction features a circular badge design with a tooth set against the background of the San Antonio skyline.

An exploded view painting of a robot at the graffiti park

May 26, 2016

I was talking to a friend at a party last Friday about doing some sort of exploded view at the graffiti park. The next day, I decided that I was going to do a robot. This was a lot of fun and I now feel more comfortable with linework. With this painting, I wanted the various robot components to come together to form a spray painting robot.

A sketch for my teacher

May 6, 2016

The head of the Cleveland Institute of Art ID department asked the alumni to produce sketches for a time capsule in honor of our respected teacher, Richard Fiorelli. Fiorelli is retiring this year after being a longtime faculty member. He's taught many great designers that I look up to.

I had Fiorelli for perspective drawing class and learned a lot from him. What I've learned from that class became the foundation for my techniques that lead to my career in industrial design. In honor of Fiorelli, I decided to produce a ballpoint sketch of graffiti letters set to a single point perspective. Its a little looser and not too labored, which is what he preferred. I made a few mistakes, but I'm very pleased with this sketch and I hope Fiorelli likes it too!

A modern Cobra helicopter sketch

April 16, 2016

The topic for this weeks sketchwars contest is helicopters. I decided to do a more modern version of the Cobra helicopter from the Vietnam war. I thought the form of that helicopter was nice and sculptural, yet aggressive. This was sketched with the iPad Pro using Procreate.

A Spitfire sketch with the iPad Pro

April 13, 2016

I recently got an iPad Pro and started sketching with the pencil and the Procreate software. The first attempt was a little rough, but this second attempt was a lot more successful. Procreate feels very natural and I really enjoy the pencil to paper feeling the iPad delivers.

Now the next step will be to see if I can create a well polished render. I'll get to this later.

A modern interpretation of a Barracuda

April 4, 2016

This is my take on a modern version of a Mopar muscle car. I was really drawn to the the Barracuda and its toothy grill. I was also very drawn to the strong graphic breakups within the hood and side graphics. I also included LED projector headlights that allow air to flow through them, like the Bugatti Chiron. Overall, I wanted something mean and green.

A 64 Ford Galaxie gasser

March 24, 2016

Dane gave some additional suggestions on how to make a better gasser sketch. He suggested that there should be more details, like a roll cage, a driver, deeper wheels in the back, a name for the car, and additional "easter eggs."

I took those suggestions to heart and created a sketch with more appropriate proportions and more details. Some of those details are Austin artist specific ;)

A gasser sketch

March 24, 2016

This week's topic for sketchwars is to draw a hot rod. My friend Dane suggested that I should draw a gasser. I wasn't sure exactly what that was, so I did a quick google image search and saw ridiculously modified hotrods for drag racing. I loved seeing the giant tires in the back, the super skinny tires in the front, the unusual lifted stance and the exposed mechanicals.

This is my attempt at capturing the ridiculous, awesomeness of the gasser hotrod. This version is some sort of 1950's chevy with an exposed roots supercharger.

A more athletic robot

March 14, 2016

This is a more athletic looking offering for the Sketchwars group. I was inspired by the anime Evangelion, as well as the latest track car the "BAC Mono." I decided to render this a little further with multiple materials as well as including a background. These types of sketches require a little more patience, but the results look very well polished!

A clumsy robot

March 13, 2016

Last Thursday, I decided to draw a clumsy robot for Sketchwars. I was inspired by the earlier Honda prototypes, where the head/body was fairly clean and simple, while the legs were very mechanical. I wanted the robot to be more friendly/comical rather than super intimidating.

A sketch for Tanya

March 6, 2016

My friend Tanya asked me to do a sketch to help her with her "Saree not Sorry" campaign. She wishes to fight anti-immigrant sentiment by promoting Indian fashion.

A girl in a sari

March 5, 2016

This weeks topic is drawing people. This was a good excuse for me to draw a girl in a sari. For years, I've been meaning to do that!

Some shoes for Sketchwars

March 5, 2016

These were sketched on an iPad Mini during my trip to California last weekend. The iPad mini is a clumsy sketch tool, but it helped me loosen up.

Sketchwars entry for this week: an electric BMW bike

February 21, 2016

This was a pretty fun sketch to work on. I imagined the wheels would be driven by plate motors while the main body houses the batteries and heat sinks.

Sketch wars entry: Max Rebos party ship

February 16, 2016

The theme for that week was to create a ship for one of the minor characters in Star Wars. I chose to design a ship for Max Rebo and his crew.
