Bionik POWER STAND PRO

Pole Position was one of the most popular arcade racing games. It was the highest grossing arcade game in Japan in 1982. In the US, it was the top grossing arcade game in 1983-1985. With its popularity, we created a mini arcade cabinet featuring Pole Position.

The Pole Position Racing Player features a fun, colorful retro design.
The artwork utilized is the same used on the classic Pole Position arcade cabinets.

Pole Position requires special controls. We added a steering wheel for a better interactive experience.
We also added a low to high gear shifter, and pedals for acceleration and braking.

The Pole Position Racing Player is preloaded with Pole Position and Pole Position II. It features a 3.5” full color display,
built in speaker with volume control, a 3.5mm headphone port, adjustable screen brightness, and can be powered by 4 AA batteries or a USB-C cable.

The Bionik Power Stand Pro was originally designed to charge PS5 VR wands.
Through ideation, I looked at various shapes and configurations that can hold a pair of wands, while incorporating the Bionik design language.

We received some ideas from the factory on how the controllers can be laid out for charging.
I explored how the charging dock would look if the wands were facing back to back.

After modeling the general shape, we explored details in Illustrator and Solidworks.

With some of the details resolved, we developed a finished prototype.

After the first prototype, we decided that a horizontal wand layout would be better.
It would be easier to grab the wands from the front of the dock, rather than from the sides.
We also looked at hiding the charging port by placing it on the bottom.

The first prototype didn’t align with the Bionik design language as much. We incorporated design elements from the prior Power Stand, such as the hexagon lens.
Like the prior Power Stand, this design is a contrast between the organic top shell and a geometric/technical base.

We were very satisfied with the second prototype.

We later learned that the PSVR2 wasn’t selling as well. We decided to adapt our design to fit 2 PS5 controllers or 2 X-Box controllers.

We decided to keep the width, and utilize the space between the controllers for charging smart phones.

After communicating with the factory, we had to change the shape of the top to accommodate a Qi induction charging coil.
We added a support shape to accommodate a vertically oriented phone, rather than horizontal orientation.

We added a top pad to better grip the phone when its placed on top of the charging dock.

The top pad design had to change to accommodate the Qi wireless charging coils.
We decided to use a hexagon for the top pad shape, with the three triangle pattern repeated onto the corners.

The rear panel was looking too plain. After exploring a few options, we decided to incorporate the three triangle pattern into a cutout graphic.

We needed to adjust the saddles to accommodate the PS5 Dual Sense controller paddles. We created a 3D print of the existing saddles and sketched out which areas needed to be removed. The factory made the necessary adjustments.

The final Bionik Power Stand Pro comes in two versions, X-Box and PS5. Both versions share the same basic shape, but have different saddles and CMF.
Both designs can charge two controllers and can wirelessly charge a smartphone.
