Bionik POWER STAND PRO
Bionik Gaming is a sub brand of dreamGEAR, which primarily focuses on accessories for gaming consoles. Bionik had success with with their dual controller
Power Stand charging dock, but needed an updated version. The Power Stand Pro adds a charging pad for wireless phone charging,
and additional LED charge indicators for each device on the front backlit display.
There are two versions of the Power Stand Pro, PS5 and XBOX. They are distinguished by unique CMFs for their brand,
and different saddles to accommodate the different styles of controllers.
When a product is charging, the underglow and front display LED indicator glows white.
When the product is fully charged, the charge indicator LEDs glow orange or green.
The PS5 and XBOX Power Stand Pros are available on Amazon as two different bundles. You can purchase a bundle with the Quickshot trigger controller add-on,
or with the Quickshot trigger controller add-on and SIREX headphones.
initial development
The Bionik Power Stand Pro was originally designed to charge PS5 VR wands.
Through ideation, I looked at various shapes and configurations that can hold a pair of wands, while incorporating the Bionik design language.
We received some ideas from the factory on how the controllers can be laid out for charging.
I explored how the charging dock would look if the wands were facing back to back.
After modeling the general shape, we explored details in Illustrator and Solidworks.
With some of the details resolved, we developed a finished prototype.
The first prototype didn’t align with the Bionik design language as much.
For the second round of ideation, we incorporated elements from the old Power Stand into the new design.
Through Illustrator and hand sketching, I looked at incorporating elements from the old Power Stand into the new design.
The old Power Stand was an organic form draped over a technical truss looking base. The hexagonal lens also ties the two products together.
These changes were then modeled in Solidworks. We worked with our factory to produce another prototype.
This design better aligns with the Bionik design language.
After learning about the low PSVR sales, we decided to adapt our dock design to charge PS5 controllers.
We used the flat space on top to charge smart phones.
After communicating with the factory, we had to change the shape of the top to accommodate a Qi induction charging coil.
We added a support shape to accommodate a vertically oriented phone, rather than horizontal orientation.
The top pad design had to change to accommodate the Qi wireless charging coils.
We decided to use a hexagon for the top pad shape, with the three triangle pattern repeated onto the corners.
The rear panel was looking too plain. After exploring a few options, we decided to incorporate the three triangle pattern into a cutout graphic.
We needed to adjust the saddles to accommodate the PS5 Dual Sense controller paddles. We created a 3D print of the existing saddles and sketched out which areas needed to be removed. The factory made the necessary adjustments.
The final Bionik Power Stand Pro comes in two versions, X-Box and PS5. Both versions share the same basic shape, but have different saddles and CMF.
Both designs can charge two controllers and can wirelessly charge a smartphone.
